A road trip through wild Scandinavia - via Sweden, Finland and Norway to the North Cape

Ein Roadtrip durch das wilde Skandinavien - über Schweden, Finnland und Norwegen bis zum Nordkap

We asked Constanze and Andi from Bavarian Trailhunt, travel bloggers and founders of the German Camper Festival, about their experiences and tips and tricks on the topic of "road trips and self-sufficient camping," and learned a lot of interesting facts. Read on and be sure to join in the dreaming.

Vast and deep forests, tranquil lake landscapes, snow-capped mountain peaks, wild and rare animals, numerous diverse national parks, glowing green northern lights gently gliding across the sky, and the northernmost point in Europe accessible by road from the mainland. A road trip through a harsh, cold, deserted, wild, and beautiful Scandinavia. A journey marked by special experiences, unforgettable impressions, and meaningful encounters! An adventure that made our hearts beat faster!

The booming camping industry

The camping industry is booming, and probably not just since the pandemic, but the industry has definitely experienced significant growth. And we can already tell you, before you read on, that a road trip through wild Scandinavia is an incredibly beautiful and special way to spend your "well-deserved" vacation. We are my husband Andi, our male Leonberger Franz, and our little Chavalier King Charles Edward. We enjoy our trips in our yellow Dodge Ram and an Airstream (an American caravan that gives us a fantastic home-like feeling).

The fascination of Scandinavia

Scandinavia – the very word makes us smile. Fjords, solitude, reindeer, adventure, and that very special feeling of freedom. Once you've been there, you'll never get over that Scandinavia fever. We were there for the first time in 2021, and ever since, we've had that feeling of longing that absolutely needs to be satisfied.

Preparation and power supply

In the summer months, the roads, paths, sights, and even campsites are packed. This year, however, we wanted to enjoy a little more solitude and peace – so we opted for the golden autumn. Before we set off, however, we gave a lot of thought to our own power supply. Scandinavia and wild camping – as often and as long as you like – are simply part of it. But we didn't want to do without a little power supply. We wanted to enjoy our road trip carefree, without any sacrifices. Everyone defines the feeling of freedom differently, and yet we wanted to create all the conditions in advance to be as self-sufficient as possible – even with our huge caravan. Because you can never have enough power. Quickly make a coffee and press the button, quickly blow-dry your hair, quickly vacuum the Airstream, or quickly plan the next route on the laptop… and much more.

Our equipment

Long searched for and finally found: The EcoFlow DELTA PRO Powerstation 3600 Wh from @solarkontor with the corresponding solar modules / one solar case WS440SUL Ultralight 440 W and one fixed plate WS440BLQ shingle solar module for the carrier on the Dodge Ram.

What's best for us is being able to connect the entire caravan to the power station, which provides ample power. With that, we were perfectly prepared, and the road trip could begin.

The beginning of the road trip

We traveled from the Bavarian Forest to the far north of Germany. Construction site after construction site, traffic jam after traffic jam, with every kilometer we drove, we came closer to Scandinavia. Once you've passed the first few kilometers in Denmark, the traffic becomes quieter—for whatever reason—and the typically Scandinavian serenity brings a smile to your face.

Through Sweden to Finland and Norway

Since we had already traveled through southern Sweden in the past, we started our road trip by covering a few kilometers quite quickly to leave this part of the country behind us. From the middle of Sweden, we took it a bit easier so we could fully enjoy our trip through Scandinavia. To reach our destination, the North Cape, an adventurous journey, marked by crossing the Arctic Circle, beautiful national parks, and the glowing green Northern Lights, took us through Finland and Norway to our destination.

At the North Cape and the return journey

After happily arriving at the North Cape, accompanied by a fierce storm, we were unfortunately unable to spend much time outside due to the weather conditions. So we cozyed up in the Airstream, drank coffee with delicious pastries, lit all the fairy lights using our power supply, and spent a cozy evening. We had reached our planned destination and then changed course from north to south. Even though this was already indirectly our return journey, we were accompanied by exciting adventures and fluffy reindeer on our way, which once again saw us cross the various Scandinavian borders.

Unforgettable experiences

On our four-week road trip, which took us from southern Germany to Sweden, Finland, and Norway, we covered almost 9,500 km and were able to experience unforgettable moments during this time.
Finland was unforgettable for us. We usually consider this country more of a transit destination, but it still completely captivated us with its incredible tranquility. We spent many nights in absolute solitude; snow already lay in the forests, and wild animals could be heard in the distance. This infinite tranquility wrapped itself around us like a cozy blanket. We still fondly remember our time in Finland.

Challenges and solutions

It would have been a shame to escape this tranquility due to a lack of electricity. The Scandinavian sun, however, didn't make an appearance often, so charging with the solar panels wasn't as productive. But on a road trip like this, you spend a lot of time in the car, so the power station could be recharged using the car charger.

Closing words

It's time for a new adventure, time for a new journey, time for wild Scandinavia!
