Ralf & Lazy

Ralf traveled through Spain with his camper van for five months without shore power and is taking us on this journey again today...
Last year, I decided to realize my long-held dream and travel through Spain in my motorhome for five months. What made this trip special was not only the impressive scenery I was able to experience, but also the fact that I was completely independent of shore power the entire time. My faithful companions: a lithium battery and solar panels from Wattstunde.
Even before the trip, it was clear to me that I wanted to be as self-sufficient as possible. I wanted to enjoy the freedom of being far away from crowded campsites and tourist hotspots, in the middle of nature. But self-sufficiency also meant carefully planning my energy supply. The decision to equip my motorhome with a lithium battery and solar panels was one of the best I could have made.

The first few days of my trip were an adventure in themselves. I drove through the Pyrenees, traveling along remote mountain roads, and my first stop was at an idyllic lake. This was the first time I saw the true power of my solar system. Despite cloudy skies, the system reliably charged my batteries. The lithium battery not only offered sufficient capacity but also the necessary efficiency to store enough energy even during periods of low sunlight.
During the course of my trip, I explored the diverse landscapes of Spain: from the arid plains of Castile to the lush green hills of Asturias to the endless beaches of Andalusia. In all these regions, I never had to rely on external energy sources. My solar panels captured the powerful Spanish sun and provided me with the electricity I needed day after day.
It was fascinating to see how the time of day and the weather affected my energy production. I quickly learned to adapt my use of appliances like the refrigerator, kettle, and laptop to the hours of sunlight. I found the feeling of living in harmony with nature and utilizing the resources the sun so generously provided particularly inspiring.

During my trip, I often had moments of amazement. Not only because of the natural beauty, but also because of the technology that enabled me to live so self-sufficiently. It was a liberating feeling not having to worry about the next campsite with an electrical connection. Instead, I could spontaneously decide where I wanted to spend the night—be it on a mountain peak, on the edge of a ravine, or right by the sea.
These five months weren't just a journey through Spain, but also a journey into myself. I learned to get by with less, live more consciously, and appreciate the little things. Last but not least, the independence from conventional resources made my trip an unforgettable experience.
