Mounting methods in detail – how to get the most out of your solar system
The correct mounting method influences the energy yield, durability, and comfort when using your solar system. Here you'll learn what's important when making your selection.
Fixed roof mounting – for maximum performance and stability
Fixed roof mounting is the classic and proven solution for motorhomes with sufficient roof area.
Here, framed or semi-flexible solar modules are permanently attached to the vehicle roof – framed ones with mounting spoilers and semi-flexible ones by bonding.
- Mounting spoilers: ensure optimal stability, secure hold in wind and driving conditions, and simultaneously support the ventilation of the modules.
- Bonding: enables clean, aerodynamic mounting without drilling – ideal for modern vehicle roofs.
Flexible deployment – mobile, versatile and independent
Foldable solar panels offer you maximum flexibility and are the perfect complement to a permanently mounted roof system.
They can be set up quickly, freely adjusted to the sun, and stored away to save space after use – ideal,
if your vehicle is parked in the shade or you have additional power requirements.
Whether as a mobile add-on module or a standalone solution – with a flexible solar set you can use the sun wherever it is shining.

FAQ | Frequently Asked Questions about Complete Motorhome Sets
Do you want to equip your motorhome with its own solar system or optimize your existing solar system?
From selecting the right complete set and installation to topics like batteries, charge controllers, inverters, and energy storage, this FAQ section provides the most important answers about complete solar kits for motorhomes . Learn how to optimally plan, install, and efficiently use your mobile power supply – for maximum independence on the road.
A motorhome solar kit supplies your vehicle with clean solar energy, independent of shore power. The solar panels, either on the roof or in a portable version, convert sunlight into electrical energy. This energy is controlled by a charge controller , which regulates the current flow to the vehicle's battery and protects the battery from overcharging or deep discharging.
The stored energy is then available for all consumers in the vehicle – from the lights to the refrigerator to the laptop.
With an inverter, you can even convert the 12-volt DC voltage of the battery into 230 volts to operate normal household appliances.
A complete set contains all the necessary components – modules, charge controllers, cables, plugs and mounting material – optimally matched for maximum efficiency and easy installation.
To know how much solar power you need, you should realistically estimate your daily energy consumption .
Here's how to do it:
- List all the devices you use – e.g., lights, refrigerator, mobile phone, laptop, water pump.
- Note their power output (watts) and usage time (hours per day) .
- Multiply power × usage time = consumption in watt-hours (Wh) .
- Add the values together – that gives you your daily consumption.
- Divide the total by the battery voltage (12 V or 24 V) → Your consumption in ampere-hours (Ah) .
👉 Even easier: Use our solar calculator .
It automatically calculates your individual consumption and shows you which complete motorhome solar kit suits your energy needs – including battery size and recommended module power.
The required solar power depends on several factors:
- Your daily electricity consumption
- The season and sunlight
- The desired self-sufficiency time (how long you want to stand without recharging)
For guidance:
- 200 W is sufficient for basic needs (lights, mobile phone, laptop).
- 400–600 W is suitable for refrigerators, water pumps and longer periods of inactivity.
- From 800 W upwards you are ideally equipped for more energy-intensive devices and longer off-grid stays.
Our tip: Plan for some extra power – that way you're on the safe side even under cloudy skies.
With our solar calculator , you can easily check how much power your motorhome really needs.
Yes – most motorhome solar kits can be installed yourself with a little DIY skill. Our complete kits already include all components and the necessary mounting hardware . However, you should note the following points:
- Cable cross-section & fuses: Always size them appropriately for the current. Use our calculator (link) to calculate your required cable cross-section.
- Mounting: Mount modules securely, vibration-proof and watertight (e.g. with roof penetrations and brackets).
- Connections: Check polarity, make clean crimp connections.
- Charge controller & battery: Place as close together as possible to minimize line losses.
If you are unsure, a quick check by a specialist workshop is recommended – especially for larger systems or 230 V systems.
Both battery types have their advantages – the choice depends on your travel habits and budget:
Lithium (LiFePO₄):
- Up to 50% lighter than AGM
- Higher usable capacity (deeper discharge possible)
- Longer lifespan (up to 3,000–5,000 cycles)
- Faster charging through high current draw
- Ideal for frequent use and self-sufficiency.
AGM battery:
- Cheaper to purchase
- Maintenance-free, reliable
- Good performance for occasional trips
Conclusion: If you travel a lot and want to be self-sufficient for extended periods, a lithium battery is almost always worthwhile in the long run, despite the higher initial costs.
The lifespan depends on the type, use, and care :
- AGM / Gel batteries: approx. 3–5 years , up to 7 years with careful use.
- LiFePO₄ batteries: approx. 10–15 years or up to 5,000 charging cycles .
Ensure longevity:
- Regular recharging, even in winter
- Avoid deep discharges
- For extended periods of inactivity, store the battery in a frost-free location and with a partial charge.
A high-quality battery and an intelligent MPPT charge controller significantly increase the battery life.
In the field of motorhome solar technology, several manufacturers have proven themselves through quality, efficiency and reliability:
- WATTSTUNDE – Complete solutions “Made in Germany” with perfectly matched sets for every vehicle type.
- EcoFlow – Innovative, integrated systems with app control and intelligent energy management.
- Victron Energy – High-quality individual components (controllers, inverters, chargers) with maximum flexibility for individual setups.
All three brands impress with proven safety, high efficiency and excellent service – depending on your needs you will find the right solution here, from entry-level sets to professional systems.
A good complete solar kit can easily be adapted to your needs.
Pay attention to expansion reserves right from the initial installation:
- Charge controller : should be able to handle additional module power.
- Cables & fuses : it's better to size them a little more generously.
- Modules : preferably of the same type and manufacturer, so that voltage and current values match.
- Battery : Expansion possible if the same cell chemistry and capacity are used.
Tip: Plan together with our team – we'll help you design your system to be modular and future-proof.
The topic of balcony power plants in motorhomes is currently appearing more and more frequently – but there are important technical differences.
A classic balcony power plant works with a micro-inverter that feeds the electricity directly into the house grid .
However, motorhomes lack this fixed power grid – the micro-inverter detects this and switches itself off (safety function).
For mobile use, you therefore need an off-grid solar system with charge controller, battery and possibly an inverter – exactly what a complete motorhome solar kit offers.
💡 Exception:
If your motorhome is parked at home and you want to feed the generated electricity into your home network, a balcony power plant can be useful – but then the same regulations apply as for stationary systems (e.g. registration with the network operator, VDE-AR-N 4105).
